JOB TITLE: Imaging Services Nurse


DEPARTMENT: Imaging Services


GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides quality nursing care to the patients in the Imaging Services Department.  Under the direction of the radiologist or cardiologist, assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents patient clinical needs and responses to diagnostic, interventional, cardiovascular and therapeutic procedures.  Monitors patients requiring moderate sedation within the department.




  1. Provides direct patient care by assessing and monitoring the patient’s condition and initiating appropriate nursing intervention utilizing nursing procedures when required.  Administers medication and contrast media as needed according to departmental procedures.
  2. Intervenes when a patient develops problems and in emergency situations provides appropriate resuscitative measures.
  3. Assists radiologists, cardiologists, and technologists with invasive procedures.
  4. Assists throughout the department with establishing venous access, IV problems, monitoring of critical patients, moderate sedation,  and other nursing procedures such as MRI Pacemaker procedures, CCTA’s and others as necessary.
  5. Identifies patient education needs and ensures that all patients and families are provided with the knowledge necessary for safe and successful discharge.  Verbally instructs patient and family regarding examination, treatment, and outcome.  Documents education according to department and hospital protocol.
  6. Assists, when needed, with explaining procedure to patient and obtaining signature on Informed Consent Form for interventional or cardiovascular procedures.  Obtains patient history pertaining to the procedure.  Records information as appropriate.
  7. Documents in Epic, pre and post care, intra-procedural monitoring and medication, LDA’s, labs, or other patient care information when appropriate.
  8. Maintains emergency equipment in Imaging Services and the Cardiac Cath Lab to include oxygen, suction, stethoscope, and blood pressure cuff.  Checks daily for the integrity of crash cart and check defibrillators.  Checks integrity of emergency tray.
  9. Provides patient, family, or home care provider with educational materials concerning renal or biliary tube care, to include referrals to internal resources.  Coordinates with patient/family/home care provider/other departments to provide supplies for care at home.




  1. Assists in the orientation of new employees and students to the department and hospital.   Educates nursing staff regarding topics related to radiology cath lab and interventional procedures, the radiology nurse, and continuity of care.
  2. Utilizes department telephone/paging system to communicate with the department/hospital.  Utilizes the compute to enter orders, delete orders, and extract patient information on laboratory, radiology, and other exam results as needed for chart documentation.  Performs other tasks in  Epic necessary for efficient departmental workflow.
  3. Maintains an on-going training program by conducting in-service lectures and individual instruction for the staff in medication administration, emergency procedures, and aseptic techniques.
  4. Keeps room/work station neat and orderly.  Maintains adequate supplies to perform examinations.
  5. Attends monthly departmental meetings, departmental in-services, and all required hospital professional and education in-services.
  6. Assists with quality assurance and risk management programs, monitors emergency equipment.
  7. Participates in the on call rotation to cover the Interventional and Cath Lab areas after hours in the evenings, nights, and weekends. 

Minimum Education and Experience:


  1. Registered nurse licensed in the District of Columbia.
  2. Current CPR certification is mandatory; ACLS certification is preferred.
