Our Client, a multi-site producer of chemicals and allied products, has an immediate opening for an Applications Development Scientist at one of its sites near Richmond, VA. 


Position Purpose & Summary

  • Responsible for the implementation and qualification of new products and product line extensions in customer’s applications.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshoot all customer quality and product performance issues. 
  • Owns in-lab formulations, testing and support to the customer for new product launches and existing products and product extensions
  • Works collaboratively with Technical Marketing Lead to get product qualified in customer trials
  • Owns and troubleshoots all customer quality and product performance issues via in-house testing
  • Keeps abreast of latest technical developments for the product and applications
  • Maintains a database to benchmark competitive offerings for each application
  • Identifies, creates and defines the application requirements for new products
  • Define data structures and application solutions
  • Defines application solutions appropriate to customer requirements and critical to quality, CTQ’s
  • Designs and builds prototypes
  • Identifies and utilizes 3rd party application labs to supplement in-house capabilities
  • Coordinates with the project team and the customers
  • Develops and deploys solutions like test plans and application guides
  • Participates in Industry Standards committees
  • Conducts literature and patent reviews defining freedom to practice


Basic Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Polymer Science required
  • 7+ years’ experience in engineering plastics application development of polymers (e.g. extrusion and molding)
  • Greenbelt certification 

Additional Qualifications

  • PhD Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science preferred
  • Knowledge of chemical manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of polymer conversion processes
  • Experience in customer facing activities
  • Familiarity with new product introduction stage gate processes
  • Knowledge about the Resins & Chemicals product portfolio and end markets
  • Knowledge of change management tools and practices
