Associate Director OR Senior Manager Market Research


My client, a research-based biopharmaceutical company based out of the South San Francisco, CA area, discovers, develops and commercializes innovative medicines in areas of unmet medical need. They strive to transform and simplify care for people with life-threatening illnesses around the world.

I am currently working on an Associate Director OR Senior Manager, Market Research role for them.  This is an individual contributor role and will have ownership of a therapeutic area (2 inline products) representing a multi-billion dollar franchise.  This is a highly visible role where you will have exposure to presentations with senior leadership.


  • 10+ years relevant biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience, including 7+ years of market research experience
  • US market experience (even if part of your global responsibility)
  • Primary Market Research experience required, in a broad range of both qualitative and quantitative market research techniques
  • Strategic thinker who understands the critical role of market research
  • Strategic, proactive partner to the brands vs. reactive
  • DTC experience is a plus
  • Self-starter who can hit the ground running
  • Cannot work remotely – must be in or willing to move to the San Francisco area    


TITLE: Associate Director OR Senior Manager, Market Research

LOCATION:  South San Francisco, CA

The Associate Director OR Senior Manager, Market Research will conduct Primary Market Research to support multiple products in their assigned therapeutic area, working in collaboration with other cross functional stakeholders.



  • Working with key stakeholders, plays a key role in development and execution of market research plan supporting assigned products
  • Manages primary market research studies, including project objective, design, vendor selection and oversight, monitoring of data collection, data analysis and interpretation across both the HCP and Patient Audiences
  • Develops relevant and compelling presentation of market research insights for key stakeholders, including brand leadership and senior management
  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of the competitive environment, including market penetration, market potential and future trends and makes recommendations based on findings
  • Working with diverse counterparts (Sales Analytics, Forecasting, Commercial Learning and Development, Managed Markets, Brand Marketing Team), develops insights and recommendations that drive key strategic and tactical decisions



  • BA/BS degree required; PhD, MBA, or other advanced degree is a plus
  • 10+ years of relevant pharmaceutical industry experience, including 7+ years of market research experience
  • In-depth experience designing and conducting a broad range of quantitative and qualitative primary and secondary market research, including appropriate application of data collection and analytical approaches. Will work across multiple channels, including but not limited to physicians, patients, allied health care professionals, pharmacists, and patient / consumer advocacy groups
  • Experience tracking Key Performance Indicators / ROI for DTP/DTC tactics across multiple channels, including television advertising is a plus
  • Secondary market research knowledge ideal for integrating results with findings
  • Strategic thinker who understands the critical role of market research in developing commercial strategy in support of both in-line products and product launch. Ability to operate in ambiguous situations and determine focused objectives and a clear path forward in the face of open questions
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and drive focused approach to meet key project objectives
  • Strong vendor management skills, including the ability to guide key decisions, ensure accountability for project execution, and ensure output is clear, concise, and easily internalized
  • Ability to meaningfully portray and effectively communicate complex quantitative data in an easy-to-understand format is required
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with ability to lead, interact with, influence others, focus, resolve conflict and drive consensus among individuals from a variety of cultures and disciplines. Ability to work with a variety of personalities and skillsets
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with an ability to be impactful with oral and written communication to diverse set of stakeholders
    Proven experience with global Sales and Marketing organizations and experience with pharmaceutical data sources e.g., IMS, SHA, and Ipsos Chart Audits are ideal
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines in an environment of competing and changing priorities. Must have strong task management skills to include planning, prioritization, objective setting, and meeting management and plan execution
  • Ability to travel up minimally (less than 20%)
